The story is set in a world covered in endless sandy deserts. Chakuro is a 14-year-old archivist who lives aboard an immense floating island, the Mud Whale, which sails the "sea" of dunes. Nine out of ten inhabitants of the floating island are gifted with the ability to use the saimia, which represents both a blessing and a curse, since although it is true that the power is useful, it is also true that those who bear it are destined to an early death . Chakuro and his young friends have never had any contact with people outside the Mud Whale and spend their time fantasizing about strangers, eager to meet them; since during the navigation they crossed various islands, but they all turned out to be uninhabited or abandoned. One day their island crosses paths with an equally large one, on this occasion Chakuro meets a new girl who will change his destiny.
