Ten years ago a mysterious black sphere appeared in the sky and destroyed the city below. Kagerou and Momiji were children at the time of this catastrophe and grew up together in the shadow of this ominous structure. There is an obvious attraction between the two but Kegerou does not want to declare his feelings to his friend because he thinks he is unable to protect her. One day the sphere attacks again, turning people into monsters. While the boy searches for Momiji he discovers something that will change their lives forever: Kagerou is then taken away by an organization that declares that he is no longer a normal human being but an "Eember", while Momiji is classified as "Dross", destined to become materials for experiments. Kagerou does not accept this sad reality and is determined to do everything in his power to save the girl he loves.
