At the beginning of the twentieth century, China was crossed by a series of popular uprisings that went down in history as "The Boxer Rebellion" and culminated in bloody massacres. In this delicate scenario takes place the saga of the young Sanniang, a poor and familyless peasant from a miserable Chinese village. Following the killing of an imperial official, by whom she had suffered harassment and mistreatment, the girl is forced to flee and joins the Boxer troops. Distrustful, naive, irascible and even violent, but also passionate and prone to infatuations, with her irresistible sympathy, the character of Sanniang, in her wanderings between China and Japan, provides a dramatic and ironic interpretation for that delicate and difficult.

Agli inizi del Novecento, la Cina è attraversata da una serie di sollevazioni popolari passate alla storia come “La rivolta dei Boxer” e culminate in sanguinosi massacri. In questo delicato scenario si svolge la saga della giovane Sanniang, contadina povera e senza famiglia di un misero villaggio cinese. In seguito all’uccisione di un funzionario imperiale, dal quale aveva subìto vessazioni e maltrattamenti, la ragazza è costretta a fuggire e si unisce alle truppe dei Boxer. Diffidente, ingenua, irascibile e perfino violenta, ma anche passionale e incline alle infatuazioni, con la sua irresistibile simpatia, il personaggio di Sanniang, nelle sue peregrinazioni tra Cina e Giappone, fornisce una chiave di lettura drammatica e ironica per quel quadro storico delicato e difficile.
