Germany, fin de siècle. The Schlotterbetz boys' gymnasium, located near Karlsruhe, on the border with Alsace, unexpectedly becomes the scene of a tragedy: the young Thomas Werner commits suicide one winter morning by throwing himself from a rickety walkway, leaving behind only a letter passionate, addressed to Julusmole Bayhan. Juli had in fact been, in life, the object of his apparently unrequited love. The school authorities pass off the death as a mere accident, but Thomas' last words continue to question Juli's soul. Where the story of a bet between Thomas and the mischievous Ante winds through the chatter of the high school students, with Julusmole's favors at stake, a ferocious doubt creeps into the latter's heart regarding the truth about Werner and his feelings towards the same. Although Juli, under the watchful eye and careful care of Oscar Resier, her roommate in Schlotterbetz, desperately tries to banish the memory of her dead companion from her mind, Eric Frühling's arrival at the gymnasium from the city of Cologne - whose appearance seems to bear an impressive resemblance to Thomas's features - ends up exacerbating in the tormented Bayhan a conflict that has never really subsided.

Il ginnasio maschile Schlotterbetz, sito nei pressi di Karlsruhe, ai confini con l'Alsazia, diviene inopinatamente teatro di una tragedia: il giovane Thomas Werner si suicida in un mattino d'inverno gettandosi da una passerella malferma, lasciando dietro di sé solo una lettera appassionata, indirizzata a Julusmole Bayhan. Juli era stato infatti, in vita, oggetto del suo amore, apparentemente non corrisposto. La morte viene fatta passare dalle autorità scolastiche per un mero incidente, ma le ultime parole di Thomas non cessano di interrogare l'animo di Juli. Laddove tra le chiacchiere dei ginnasiali serpeggia il racconto di una scommessa tra Thomas e il malizioso Ante, con i palio i favori di Julusmole, nel cuore di quest'ultimo s'insinua un dubbio feroce in merito alla verità su Werner e i propri sentimenti verso il medesimo. Sebbene Juli, sotto l'occhio vigile e le attente cure di Oscar Resier, suo compagno di stanza a Schlotterbetz, tenti disperatamente di scacciare dalla propria mente il ricordo del compagno morto, l'arrivo al ginnasio, dalla città di Colonia, di Eric Frühling - il cui sembiante sembra recare un'impressionante rassomiglianza con le fattezze di Thomas - finisce per esacerbare nel tormentato Bayhan un conflitto mai realmente sopito.
