Siamo nel 2599. Il processo di "terraforming" di Marte avanza, e il muschio che vi è stato portato cinquecento anni prima ha ormai ricoperto tutta la superficie del pianeta. Quindici giovani, scelti per l'importante missione di monitorare la situazione, si imbarcano su una nave spaziale alla volta del pianeta rosso. Ma ad attenderli troveranno qualcosa di totalmente inaspettato e raccapricciante: gli scarafaggi usati per insediare la vita secoli addietro si sono evoluti in umanoidi, possiedono una potenza fisica spaventosa e sono decisamente poco ospitali... Riusciranno gli umani a (ri)prendersi Marte?
